A place to dream

By aeras
This secluded shore is surrounded by a very high and steep rock formation and it usually accessible only from the sea. To get there on foot , one has to hike downhill for half an hour in order to get to sea level and then climb up for another 45 minutes to get back. Light pollution is still high but not as high as other shores of Cyprus ( excluding Akamas peninsula). I arrived at the area around midnight and I switched my headlamp off and just stayed there gasping at the beauty in front of me. Moments like these I realize how small we are and feel grateful and so lucky that I can witness such a beauty !!! This a panorama of 21 vertical frames , 3 rows by 7 columns , taken with the Nikon D800 and the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8. White balance was set to manual so as to be consistent and settings for each fame was f/3.2 ISO 2540 , 25 seconds . The Raw files were batch processed in Camera Raw and saved as Tiffs. Photoshop CS 6 run into trouble trying to stitch them so I used Microsoft's ICE (Image Composite Editor) which I found to be much faster and way better than PS and also ... free Smile . ICE gives you the option to see the various methods of projection in real time while in PS you have to do it all over again to see the result with a different method of projection. The resulting Stitched Tiff was imported in to PS for processing. Noise was removed with Topaz de-noise-5 plugin , The foreground was masked and the sky was given some contrast and detail in order to enhance the Galaxy. A dodge layer was used to lighten the waves that were breaking in the foreground and also lighten the boat. A burn layer was used to selectively darken areas around the frame and some of the immediate foreground. finally a mild "glow" was added.

Sounds like one heck of a lot of processing involved! - but the final result is very nice indeed.

Fantastic.....and I very much appreciate the "recipe" for how it was achieved. I am here to learn and this one has an awful lot to go on!. Worth it.

Wow, just wow! The image is gorgeous, and I really liked how honest you are about what you've done to it. It works, it just does Smile

One more comment though: Yes we are small, but we can achieve big and great things in life, just like you did here.

Stunning. I remember sitting at the top of a mountain in a French Ski resort gazing up at a sky like this........ It is mesmerising to see and imagine what is out there....... I could have sat there all night ---- but it was very cold.... Smile
