On The Beach

By ahughes3
I took this whilst on holiday in Cornwall a couple of years ago. We spent a day at Bigby-on-sea and towards the end of the day there was a lovely golden light, but the place was heaving with people so there was very little chance of getting a shot without hundreds of people in it. My son and I went for a walk along the beach and I turned back to see him strolling along in a daydream. He looked very serene and I wanted to capture it. This was the only way I could think of without getting lots of distracting people in the shot. I love the way it turned out and I gave it a vintage summer tone to liven the colouring up.

Hope you like! Grin

I love the way this merges personal with abstract. It does look a bit gloomy to me though, it doesn't really say golden light. The tonal range is quite limited, I suspect that an adjustment in Levels moving the outer sliders in just a bit would bring the light to life.

I really like the way it turned out, too! I love the pinks and blues together and the way that the blurring virtually anonymises the whole thing. It's a wonderful abstract for someone not personally connected with the image in the way you are; and it's a lovely memory for you of your son wandering along in his own little world Smile

I agree - tremendous abstract image - personally I like the "gloomy" oppressive feel. It reduces the Bathers/walkers to smears in the sand, but still manages to pull the viewer through the scene. Great imaginative stuff.

Thank you all for the great comments, I think I may be hanging this on my wall Smile

@MrsWoolyBill - I totally get what you say and why. I probably shouldn't have mentioned the golden light as that's not the effect I had in my head. I wanted to create a vintage feel but with the sunset colours of pinks and purples. The original shot has golden tones but there is not enough range and it looks quite uninspiring. Happy to upload if you want to try a mod on it Smile
