    Thank you all for taking the time to comment and do the Mods. loads of things to think about, I will go back and have a play in Gimp and see if I can get similar effects. I will also watch out for sharpness in future

    I will try and get out earlier however that was about the only sunny hour all last weekend! I am hoping summer will break out at some point, before it starts to snow again.

    Yes I am still using Gimp. I had actually cropped it and cloned out some power lines in the bottom left that I couldn't get rid of wherever I stood. I had just used the desaturate function to convert it so thanks for that tip, I will use the Channel Mixer in future and pay more attention to the contrast

    Looking at the colour original I think the smudges are very fine high level clouds, but it may be a halo effect as it was very bright and they are very shiny.

    And I will upload them bigger next time
