Agitation Turned To Joy

By AlanBW
We were sat in an open-air café / bar in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, taking a lunch-stop during our guided tour of the city. During the morning Tricia and I had spent about four hours seeing the sights and in the afternoon we were off to Rundale Palace, a little way over the border in Latvia. Sat not far away from us was the lady pictured above and she was getting into a state of considerable agitation. Sophisticated, very smartly dressed and with a slightly haughty bearing, she was clearly waiting for someone, given the anxious glances down the street and the constant checking of her expensive looking watch. Here was a subject too good to miss and during one of her angst-ridden stares into the distance, I managed to capture the image above - something to which she was totally oblivious. Several times she was approached by a waiter, a few words were exchanged and he went away, but nothing was brought to the table. Presumably, we thought, she had told him that she would order when her guest arrived. We got caught up in this scenario ourselves, finding ourselves looking down the street to see if anyone was coming in. We were reaching the time when we were about to pay and leave in order to join the rest of our group, when we observed the lady’s worried gaze transform into an expression of sheer joy as a young woman, very likely her daughter, came into view. The lady stood bold upright with a smile that shone like a beacon; the two embraced warmly and sat down – drinks were ordered and an animated and happy conversation ensued. We were pleased to have seen the conclusion of this little drama - one that ended happily at that.
