Apples For Sale

By AlanBW
During our recent fascinating trip through Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania we got to know some delightful people who were part of the group, none more so than John and his lovely wife Pat, who live in Welwyn Garden City. We got chatting to them on the first evening of the trip and John asked about my enthusiasm for photography, which he had noticed during the day. I explained that I enjoyed taking shots of all sorts of things but especially people. I showed him a couple of the characters I had captured and he was both interested and amused - he called it caricature photography. The following morning I captured another great character, John himself! During the lunchbreak I showed Pat, who was highly amused; then I showed John, who took it really well, even though his first reaction was to vow he would get his revenge! John then became a self-appointed spotter for me and it is due to him that the above image was taken. On our wonderful Baltic adventure we criss-crossed the borders and the above image was taken in Latvia. We were making our way towards the magnificent baroque palace of Rundale, when John ran up behind me, tapped me on the shoulder and pointed out the lady shown above. She was selling apples to the visiting tour parties and was sat on the ground with her wares spread in front of her. My immediate reaction was to go back, promising John that I would do my best to capture the shot. As soon as I saw her I was intrigued by her colourful clothing and her marvellous, character-filled features. I had to wait a while for the right opportunity and the shot was taken from distance through a gap in the crowd. The lady was clearly concentrating on something, for her tongue stuck out at just the right moment! John, the intrepid 'spotter', was delighted at the result and for the rest of the trip he was watching out for potential characters. I didn't get them all and in some cases I had got there first, but we had a huge amount of fun in the process.
