Belvedere Palace, Vienna

By AlanBW
Not a character study this time, but there's no harm in ringing the changes on occasions.

Pictured above is the front view of the beautiful upper Belvedere Palace in Vienna. This was one of many magnificent buildings that Tricia and I saw on our recent visit to the capital of Austria. There are a few miniscule figures within the image, which will give an idea of the scale of the structure.

Sited in a most impressive park that also contains lower Belvedere Palace, this was built for Prince Francois-Eugene of Savoy-Carignan (1663-1736), who was one of the greatest generals to serve the Hapsburg Empire. In Austria he is known as Prinz Eugen.

The Belvedere complex was built between 1714 and 1723; both palaces being designed by the celebrated baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Prince Eugene resided in upper Belvedere and some years after his death the entire park and both palaces were sold by his heirs to Archduchess Maria Theresa, who was the first to name it Belvedere, (beautiful view).

The last person to reside here was Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who along with his wife Sophie was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914. Princip was one of seven conspirators who planned the assassination and all were members of the nationalist political group Young Bosnia; they were also thought to have links with The Black Hand, an anarchist fringe movement. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand and Sophie led to the Austrian declaration of war on Serbia, an event that sparked the Great War of 1914-18.

Since the end of the Great War, the Austrian Gallery museum has resided in the Belvedere.

A lovely capture of this spectacular palace.
The fountain was empty when I took my version in the wintertime, so I took the rear view instead.
We were lucky to see the Klimt collection here.

A lovely picture of a beautiful building. Strange to think that such a lovely building had links with the outbreak of WW1.
