Bratislava - The City

By AlanBW
The old town area of Bratislava is a wondrous place teeming with classical architecture. The picture above shows a street leading to Michaelís Gate, the only surviving gate of the cityís mediaeval fortifications. The 51 m high baroque tower was constructed in 1758, complete with a statue of St. Michael on the top.

Sited close to the River Danube, Bratislava itself has a fascinating history. Believed to have been founded by Celts in the 1st century B.C., it has been influenced by many different peoples, including the Romans, Slavs, Austrians, Hungarians, Germans, Czechs and Slovaks.

In 1536 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and throughout the centuries it was the coronation site of nineteen Hungarian Kings. In 1919, after the end of WW1, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which Bratislava was a part, was dissolved. Bratislava was then incorporated into the newly-formed republic of Czechoslovakia. Known at various times throughout history as Pressburg, Prespork and Pozsony, it was proposed in 1919 that the city be re-named Wilson City, after U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Ultimately this was rejected and the name Bratislava was chosen instead.

Events dominated by Hitlerís Third Reich led to a separate state of Slovakia being set up in 1939 and during this brief period Bratislava was the capital. Occupied by German forces during this time, the city was liberated by the Russian Red Army in April 1945. Czechoslovakia again came into existence, but became part of the Russian-influenced socialist bloc. It was not until 1989, with the start of the dissolution of the U.S.S.R, that things began to change and Czechoslovakia became free of Russian influence. In a further move, at the stroke of midnight on 31st December 1992 the Czech Republic and Slovakia were established as independent countries and Bratislava once again became a capital city.
