Bratislava - The Courtyard

By AlanBW
Another very different image from me, but this is so unusual that I was keen to post it on EPZ and add it to my portfolio. It might not attract much interest due to the curious nature of the image, but I like it so here it is.

Although we only spent a few hours exploring the very impressive old quarter of Bratislava, we enjoyed it very much indeed. This part of Slovakia’s capital city is full of wonderful architecture and includes churches, embassies and consulates, museums, shops, inns and hotels, all of which are ornate and eye-catching in design. Streets lead from the main square and off these streets are numerous alleyways leading to some really fascinating and beautiful courtyards.

The picture above is of just such a courtyard and as soon as I caught a glimpse of it, the possibilities of an interesting image were clear. I was struck not only by the contrasts of colour, but also the geometric contradictions between the circles on the ground; the rectangles and arches of the windows, doorways and openings; the corner of the courtyard; plus the patterns and angles of the balcony railings. To my eye this was a fascinating abstract / architectural image comprising many interesting and differing components. It will be interesting to know what you all think.

Architecturally Alan the building is simple almost Quaker, it's when you come down to the lower levels the dazzle sets in, the eye is spun round in many circles, and then finds itself climbing up the arches and back up the structure. It is amazing with all these shapes.

Well-spotted and a very interesting write up.
