Crouching Tiger

By AlanBW
Still in Bangkok, I observed this fascinating character outside a massive shopping mall. He is a motor cycle taxi rider and always operates outside the same exit of the mall along with several colleagues, who tout for custom as shoppers leave, often heavily laden with bags and parcels. Motor cycle taxi riders ply their trade at almost every exit. I was most intrigued by his stance, style of dress and the predatory manner in which he eyed up potential customers.

The mall is the MBK Centre, an enormous eight storey outlet first opened in 1985 and one of the biggest in Asia. MBK has around 2,500 stores and services, over 150 eating establishments and a large cinema. There is a wealth of items on offer including clothes, handicrafts, cosmetics, confectionery, hairdressers, jewellery and watches, electronic and information technology products - including mobile phones, exchange booths, furniture, restaurants, a supermarket and a four storey department store called Tokyu.

It is estimated that the MBK centre has 100,000 customers per day including 30,000 tourists from all parts of the world. MBK is 330 metres long and the total selling area is around 89,000 square metres.

Having taken my shot, I was delighted when the character above, who in that outfit wouldn't have been out of place in a crew of pirates, got a customer. It was a young Thai woman who was overwhelmed with shopping bags. New Year was approaching, so she had probably been buying gifts for friends and family. Having sorted out safety helmets for himself and his passenger, who sat side-saddle clutching her remaining packages, he hung around half a dozen bags on the handle bars. Another package was secured around his neck and having checked that his customer was ready, he set off. Doubtless he was back again in a few minutes, waiting for another customer.

An excellent candid capture Alan, he looks really menacing. It's a good job he didn't spot you with your camera or you could have been on the receiving end of a kung fu kick or karate chop! A really interesting story as usual and the mono conversion was an inspired choice
