How Do I Look?

By AlanBW
The above image was taken in the popular resort of Pattaya, Thailand, from the bottom of a flight of steps leading into a large shopping mall. Tricia and I had arranged to meet outside the mall at a pre-set time after browsing and buying. I confess to having a somewhat limited threshold when it comes to shopping and was therefore several minutes early, so I crossed the busy road and surveyed the beach and all the boat activity in the bay, taking a few shots in the process. As I waited for a break in the heavy traffic so that I could get back over the road to the mall, I spotted the Japanese tourist shown above, sitting at the top of the steps surrounded by an array of handbags on one of the outside stalls. As I approached slowly, camera primed in case there was an opportunity to take a shot, he was engaged in an animated conversation on his mobile phone and smoking a cigarette. I hung around at the base of the steps, pretending to be adjusting my camera, but all the time waiting for my chance. Suddenly the phone conversation ceased and the phone was thrust back in his pocket; the cigarette was stubbed out and I feared that the opportunity had been lost. Fortunately, a momentary gap appeared in the host of shoppers going to and from the mall just as he sat bolt upright and adjusted his headgear – and the camera clicked. I was intrigued not only with his pose and expression, but also his choice of clothing. What is it about being on holiday that engenders sartorial insanity in some tourists?

Shortly after I had succeeded in taking my shot, Tricia emerged carrying a couple of shopping bags and we set off for a leisurely break in our activities, calling at a nearby bar so that I could view my latest images and Tricia’s buys – and it was also time for an ice-cold Chang beer!

Whoooaaa...now that is some outfit!! Very Japanese hiphop youth. He could even pass off as Thai, especially with the that brownness of his legs!

I think his outfit is meant to show up the bags at the back...lol.

Very good capture, Alan Smile

Good capture Alan and as always the narrative is topnotch. In fact I was particularly interested to find out how you always manage to capture great candid shots: I can now see the cheeky technique of pretending to adjust camera etc. Wink Mastering this technique is an art in itself, let alone taking pictures! And as far this tourist’s taste for clothe, it’s a disaster… but it sure makes a colourful picture! Click
