Introducing Faa

By AlanBW
Once again through circumstances out of my control I’ve fallen a long way behind with viewing people’s latest EPZ offerings. We had to go off to Devon on urgent family matters last week and only returned home late on Sunday evening. I’ll endeavour to catch up over the next few days or so, but regrettably it will have to be click and run at times, so my apologies in advance.

I’m not at all sure how this new upload will be received; it’ll probably disappear without trace, but as the images above are of an enchanting child who is very close to our hearts, I wanted to include them in my portfolio, so here they are. The images are of an adorable little Ahka girl called Faa (meaning ‘Sky’), who lives in Bangkok. We have befriended Faa almost since she was born – we even ‘knew’ her when her mum was expecting and at that time we referred to Faa as ‘the bump’. Faa’s mum and dad work at night by our favourite little bar in Bangkok – mum sells Akha handicrafts to tourists and dad is employed to encourage visitors to patronise certain bars / shows in the entertainment district of Patpong. Now nearly three years old, Faa accompanies her parents when they are at work up to the time that they go home around midnight. (Faa and her mum have featured in a previous upload ‘Ahka Mum And Babe’, when the then very young Faa was slung on mum’s back).

Bouncy and bubbly by nature, Faa scuttles up and down the pavement at the front of the open-fronted bar and is fawned over by everyone, including street vendors, tourists, policemen (there is a police booth just outside the bar), shop workers, bar staff and everyone else who passes by. Faa has taken a great liking to Tricia and I and always makes a beeline for us when we call in to see our Thai friends who work at the bar. Faa has a mind of her own (and likes her own way) and she will choose who she wants – she makes her decision and stands in front of one us holding out her arms, which means she wants to be lifted onto a spare seat or a lap – more often than not the latter. Once ensconced in the place of her choice, Faa usually kicks off her shoes, which indicates that she is going to be there for some while. Faa spends quite a bit of time with us, which of course means that we have to keep her amused – not that this is in any way a hardship for us. Despite the language barrier, Faa makes herself understood very well and we have a lot of fun and enjoyment from her company. Tricia and I are both trying very hard to learn some basic Thai, so hopefully one day we’ll be able to have a simple conversation with her. Faa’s mum and dad know us pretty well and are perfectly happy to leave their daughter in our care. If Faa decides that she wants to go back to them, one of us will always take her.

The series was captured handheld in the harsh lighting of the bar area and taken over several evenings during our most recent trip to Bangkok. The images are heavily cropped to take out as much of the busy background as possible; they show Faa in a variety of poses and moods, all of which reflect different facets of her delightful and endearing personality. I hope that you will like them.

In this first offering Faa is enjoying herself playing a peek-a-boo game.
