Prague - The Bridge at Night

By AlanBW
Still very busy, so I've got a lot of portfolios to visit and catch up on. It might have to be click and run, but I will get up to date eventually!

Night shots are not my usual sort of upload, but there's no harm in trying something different from time to time.

Tricia and I were crossing one of Prague’s most famous monuments, the magnificent Charles Bridge, at about 9.00 at night. We were making our way towards the picturesque baroque quarter of Prague called Mala Strana (Lesser Town) and in particular to a favourite watering hole called U Glaubicu. There were still a lot of people, many of them visitors like us, scurrying to and fro across the bridge and I thought that a shot of the beautifully illuminated palace and cathedral would be quite impossible. It was our last night in Prague, so this was perhaps the final opportunity of our trip to get this image. I waited, hoping for a gap to open up and indeed one did, so I was able to squeeze off just a single hand-held shot before a large party of tourists overtook us, obstructed the view and thereby ruled out any other opportunities. The hustle and bustle that was still happening on the bridge at this time of night is evidenced by the motion-blurred and almost ghostly figures to the right. I was very uncertain about uploading this shot because of those figures, but sometimes content overrides technical elements and I was rather pleased with the way the illuminated buildings showed up, including the Bridge Tower and St. Nicholas Church to the left – and capturing the guy chatting away nonchalantly on his mobile phone was a nice bonus. Some will like the inclusion of the ethereal figures and others will not, but for me it epitomises the wonderful atmosphere of that night, with the buzz of the multi-national throng all around us.

And what of the rest of the evening? We crossed Charles Bridge and entered Mala Strana, taking in a few more fantastic architectural sights before spending a most pleasant hour or so in the convivial atmosphere of U Glaubicu, where we enjoyed a very tasty snack and some excellent Czech beer. After that, it was a short walk to the tram stop and back to the hotel.

I think there's a nice relationship between all the elements of this image, they seem to belong, to enhance each other and hold it in balance; lights, colours, figures, statues and buildings, oh - and the tree of course, leaning across to meet the statue's out-stretched hand.

Well-executed shot - it can be done without a tripod (I've uploaded a couple myself), but they don't all work as well as this. For a single effort, it's a gem!

That's a great image, Alan, and a lesson too. The blurry figures do add atmosphere to the picture! I guess most of us would have chucked it out but you've shown that a good pic can carry it!

Ah, Prague! I visited this fascinating city a few years ago as part of a Morris side - not sure what the locals thought of us though! I recall being accosted by a young oriental 'Lady of the Night' - must have been attracted by me bells! Wink

Back to the've caught the atmosphere perfectly Alan, and just enough light left in the sky.

You have captured some incredible detail here Alan. You must have a steady hand, because that looks like a very slow shutter speed to me. The buildings look great and there is enough detail in the shadows. The chap with the mobile on the left is an added bonus.
