Prague - The Musician

By AlanBW
Tricia and I were heading towards the church of Our Lady Before Tyn in Prague's Old Town Square; where we were due to meet up with fellow EPZ member George Rusky, who lives in this beautiful city. We arrived a few minutes early to find the Old Town Square jostling with people, most of them visitors like ourselves. We managed to get past the astronomical clock, where a considerable crowd was already gathering to watch the hour being marked - and came across a number of market stalls in the centre. We explored some of these and as we were browsing, we heard the melodic sound of a saxophone being played. We headed in the direction of the music and encountered the flamboyant and stylishly attired character pictured above. A small crowd had gathered to watch him entertaining, not just with his excellent musical skills, but with his effervescent personality. A small sound system provided the background music, while he played the main parts of the tunes on his saxophone. In the above image, a short break had come in the saxophone line and the background music was playing. Did he just stand still and wait for his next part? Not at all, he danced around like an eighteen year-old disco diva, interacting with the crowd with his twinkling eyes and engaging smile, before launching into his excellent saxophone playing once again.

It was far from easy to get the shot, as I had to make my way towards the front of the crowd, line up and hit the shutter. Twice I was thwarted by enthusiastic people rushing forward to put money into his collection box and on another occasion his rather energetic dance routine turned him away from the camera just as I was ready to shoot. Fortunately, another opportunity soon arose and I managed to squeeze off a couple of shots. By this point we were running out of time, our meeting with George was getting close, so I couldn’t take any more images. This Prague musician was a genial, mesmerising character and a superb entertainer; well worth the donation we made to his collection - after I had taken the shot. Two minutes later we had made our way to the front of Our Lady Before Tyn – and another wonderful character was awaiting us, none other than George Rusky himself.
