Rama VIII Bridge, Bangkok

By AlanBW
This is a very long way out of my comfort zone, but I thought that it was time for a short break from the usual fare of images of people, (but probably not for long).

One evening during the latter stage of our most recent stay in Bangkok, Tricia and I decided to call in on some friends who work in a small bar / restaurant in the back-packer haven of Khao San Road and elected to go by the Chao Praya express boat from Sathorn pier. Having just alighted from the boat that you can see heading away on the right, I captured the above image of the highly impressive Rama VIII Bridge. The image was taken handheld and without flash. It was quite atmospheric seeing this imposing sight lit up as dusk fell and witnessing boat activity still going on even though the sun had gone down.

Officially opened in September 2002 the Rama VIII Bridge is a cable-stayed construction and has a single pylon approximately one third of the distance from the northwest end of the structure. From this pylon there are suspension cables extending to the road surface. Around 2.45 km in length, not surprisingly this eye-catching bridge has become a tourist attraction and one of the modern structural icons of Bangkok.

Lovely shot of the bridge the light reflecting of the cables is most impressive and there is enough light left in the sky to show the cloud detail nicely. - gary
