Red Arrows

By AlanBW
Despite living close to RAF Fairford for nearly 30 years, Tricia and I had never attended the Royal International Air Tattoo before. This year we decided it was time that we did. The day didn't start too well as the traffic to Fairford was so heavy that it took us two hours to go the nine miles from home - good job we started out early! As luck would have it, despite the dodgy forecasts the weather on Saturday was superb.

Eventually we parked in a large field and made our way to the main area, where there were scores of aircraft on display, plus a few vintage cars and a superb collection of Harley Davidson motorcycles. All day the large crowd was entertained by amazing feats of flying from all sorts of aircraft, but the highlight of the day for most people was the appearance of the wonderful Red Arrows.

I tend to concentrate my photography on people and places, so this took me well and truly out of my comfort zone. Not only was it my first attendance at the Royal International Air Tattoo, but it was also the first time I had ever attempted to photograph aircraft in flight - and most of them were moving really fast! The above shot - taken hand held - shows part of the display by the Red Arrows, who kept the spectators enthralled with a series of spectacular manoeuvres. Tricia caught some terrific aerial action on her video camera.

Excellent capture of a very difficult moving target.
I was lucky enough to spend a day with the Red Arrows, a really fascinating day, as I was also allowed to sit in on their pre-flight briefing and the post flight one as well, they are so tough on themselves.
They were all SO young.
Super capture, well done.

PS The planes are so lod they are almost stuck together with sticky tape and no computers on board. They line up by wing nuts !!
