Suvarnabhumi

By AlanBW
Something totally different from me on this occasion and because of it's unusual nature, it may attract very little attention.

This is a detail of the impressively designed new international airport in Bangkok. Named Suvarnabhumi, (Golden Land) by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand (Rama IX), the airport cost an estimated 155 billion baht (approx 3 billion US dollars) and was beset by delays before it was finally opened on 28th September 2006. It boasts the world's tallest control tower at 132.2m and the second largest airport terminal (570,000 sq m). Suvarnabhumi (pronounced su-wan-na-poom) has replaced the 91 year-old Don Muang airport as Thailand's international hub.

Suvarnabhumi's start as an international airport has not been smooth and work has already had to be carried out to repair cracks in the runways. There is even talk of moving domestic flights back to Don Muang in order to ease congestion. While our own experience of Suvarnabhumi was extremely positive, the jury is still out amongst passengers in general, with some reporting slow luggage retrieval, long queues at Immigration, etc., (the same sort of complaints about airports the world over).

The above shot was taken on the approach to our allocated gate and angled slightly downwards to take in some of the waiting passengers and the rest of the terminal stretching away into the distance. Although an ardent fan of classical architecture, I was impressed by the futuristic geometric design of Suvarnabhumi. Hopefully the teething troubles will soon be overcome and the planned future expansion projects for the airport will go ahead without any major problems.

Alan, as ever the time you have taken to explain and educate you visitors is as well-deserving of a click as the quality of your image. I really like the perspective in this, let's hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel for the new airport as there is in this great shot!

What a structure. You captured it well and B&W is the right choice. Bert
12 Feb 2007 7:52PM
it's a bloody awfull structure. Don Muang is about to reopen, domestic carriers are moving back, Suvarnabhumi is - already - about to be closed - partially or completely - to fix all the shortcomings. It's a - be it rather good looking - airport built in the middle of a swamp. It's construction is rotten to the core because of corruption. Not a grain of sand used to build it, not a tiny piece of equipment to fill it has not been tainted by kickbacks or other forms or corruption. As if it's only reason to be build was to allow a number of people to fill their - already overflowing - pockets.
At least now Thailand finally has it's own monument in honour of the corruption that is embedded in their society so deeply. Only thing missing is a namechange from Golden Land to Greed

good photo though Alan. Like that you went b&w here.
