Tatanka (150th Upload)

By AlanBW
This is my 150th upload since joining EPZ. While my images are rather modest compared to the very high standards set by so many of the superb photographers on this site, I believe that I have improved since joining EPZ, thanks to the advice, guidance and encouragement that I have received. My sincere thanks to all the EPZ members who have given feedback on my efforts; I really appreciate it.

The above image was taken at the weekend in the centre of Swindon. Outside a now empty shop in the main shopping street, a Native American trio were giving a sparkling performance of their traditional music and selling CD’s of their work. Known as 'Tatanka' – Sitting Bull’s tribal name was ‘Tatanka Iyotake’ – the trio were genuine Sioux. Their costumes and face paints were superb, as was their music and occasional bouts of frenetic dancing. They drew a large, appreciative crowd and their CD’s were selling well. I made my way to a vantage point, switched on the camera and managed to take one shot, ruined by someone walking in front at the crucial moment, before I got a ‘battery low’ warning. No problem as I always carry a spare set – I changed the batteries and switched the camera on again – and these gave a similar warning! I therefore had to abort and hurry to a shop to pick up a set of batteries – the ones that claim to outlast all other brands - before returning to the place where the Sioux musicians were still attracting the passers-by with their splendid performance. (I hasten to add that once I got home I recharged all four sets of my camera batteries!)

Having rejoined the spectators and manoeuvred my way to a suitable vantage point, this time I was more successful and despite some shots being spoiled by people getting in the way, I managed to capture a few worthwhile images. I would have stayed longer, but the sky was becoming darker and more threatening by the minute, so when the first clap of thunder boomed overhead I decided that it time to get under cover. The rain was absolutely hammering down as I headed towards the place where we had parked the car, but as it was at least an hour before the time that Tricia and I had agreed to meet, I was forced to call in to an emporium that serves a superb range of fine ales!!! (I just had a couple of pints and No, I didn’t drive home.)

As I left the watering hole, a scruffy-looking and quite intoxicated ‘comedian’ sitting under the canopy in the open-air area by the entrance spotted my camera, jumped in front of me and slurred, ‘Hey, look guys, it’s the f****** paparazzi! Wanna take my picture, mate?’ Without breaking my stride I smiled and replied, ‘I only take shots of things that are interesting, so that rules you out, doesn’t it?’ His drinking buddies all fell about laughing (at him), but for some strange reason he wasn’t at all amused! There was a volley of X-rated verbal abuse ringing in my ears as I walked towards the car park, but I just laughed and continued on my way.
