Templed Out!

By AlanBW
When Tricia and I were in Chiang Mai earlier this year, we negotiated with a local ‘bucket shop’ to take a trip to Wat Doi Suthep, a magnificent temple set high in the hills outside the city, which affords wonderful views across the valley below. Our trip was in a mini-bus and among our travelling companions was the guy pictured above. He was French – a delightful man called Pierre who oozed typical Gallic charm. With his shock of hair he reminded me a little of the actor Billy Crystal. Pierre’s English was very good and we conversed quite a lot during the journey. We stopped here and there on the way, calling in at temples and other places of interest. Wat Doi Suthep was every bit as spectacular as we had remembered from our previous visit in 2000 and although slightly misty, the views were quite breathtaking.

The first image shows Pierre in animated conversation at Wat Doi Suthep, where he was still showing plenty of interest in what was there for us to see. However, by the time we had stopped at a couple more places on the return journey, I think that Pierre had become ‘templed out’ as he just wasn’t displaying very much enthusiasm in getting out of the mini-bus to look around. Finally, we reached the outskirts of Chiang Mai and it was clear that Pierre had his mind set on returning to his hotel and sitting by the pool with a cold beer. Just then the driver took an unexpected turn and we pulled up outside yet another temple and were told that we had half an hour to explore the complex. Tricia and I loved every minute of all this as we take great delight in visiting Thai temples, so we alighted from the mini-bus and scuttled about taking photos and video. By contrast, poor Pierre just trudged around muttering to himself and he was obviously tired and fed up. The second image reflects this mood, when I spotted Pierre ambling along aimlessly just behind us – and without him knowing a thing about it I caught him right in mid yawn!

You don't often upload in mono but when you do it's a good 'un! V1 is perfect, catching an energetic expressive face in action. Love the way he's launching forward. I'd like to see a bit of space around him, but that's a minor quibble.
