The Viennese Whirl

By AlanBW
Tricia and I have just returned from Europe, where we visited four capital cities – Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Prague. I plan to upload a few images from each city, starting with Vienna.

Whilst in Prague we had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful George Rusky, who kindly took a break in his busy day to spend some time with us.

I have missed many uploads while we were away, but will try to catch up. If I comment on some but just click on others, I hope you will understand.

The above image is of a young lady who was selling tickets for a concert of Mozart’s music outside Vienna’s magnificent Gothic cathedral, the Stephandom. She stood out from the bustling crowd in her beautiful costume. We noticed that she was flitting about, talking to potential customers, then spying out her next target before darting towards them. We dubbed her ‘the Viennese Whirl’. Her lovely smile lit up a grey, chilly day as she approached people with her sales pitch and when watching out for likely customers, she developed a much more serious, almost predatory countenance, which is what I tried to capture. We were targeted ourselves and she almost danced across the square towards us. Sadly the concert was that evening and we had a function to attend, so we could not buy tickets from her. We explained and wished her luck with her sales before continuing towards the cathedral, which was top of our 'must see' list in Vienna. We were delighted when shortly after I had taken the above shot she sold tickets to a group of visitors. Beaming while handing over the tickets, she noticed our pleasure at witnessing her success. As her customers left she punched the air in delight and grinned at us before flitting towards another target. The Viennese Whirl was in full cry!

Later, as we emerged from the cathedral, she skipped across like an excited child to tell us that she was doing well with her sales. What a fantastic character - and a magical memory!

Her expression speaks volumes once the description's read! Not an easy job to spend all day pitching sales; I'd hate it! Love the look of determination on her face. I envy you this particular trip - I hope I can get to Prague at some point in my life (and Vienna would be a bonus!).

A wonderful story and one of my favourite cities. I still remember climbing to the top of one of the cathedral's spires around narrow twisty stairs. Then at the top was a gift shop!

Alan, happy Easter to you and Trish. You've got another great shot here and it sounds like you had another fine trip. Sue and I loved Vienna, Budapest and Prague. I regret that I didn't know George back then. his friendship through ePz is just one more reason I'd like to get back to the Czech Republic.
This site (ePhotozine) is amazing that way.
Sue and I will be putting up Anne Lovelock (annefromleo) and her husband Christopher. They will be visiting from their home on the Isle of White.
