Time For A Snack!

By AlanBW
The above image was captured on a visit to Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. For further details about Chatuchak, please see the description for one of my previous uploads, entitled 'Street Entertainer'.

In the centre of the enormous, bustling site that is Chatuchak Weekend Market, there is an impressive clock tower, which is surrounded on all sides by clothing stalls - and teeming with hundreds and hundreds of shoppers.

It is around the base of the clock tower that people often take a rest - sitting watching others, sipping at water bottles, smoking cigarettes, chatting with friends and relatives, sorting out shopping, waiting for someone and sometimes taking an impromptu snack. Tricia and I had reached this area and we agreed to have a look around and meet up in about half an hour by the clock tower. I arrived there a few minutes before the designated time and was looking for a place to sit and watch the world go by, but there was not a single space available. So instead I stood and surveyed the sitters - and in doing so I spotted the fascinating character pictured above. With numerous large shopping bags at her feet, she was just sitting as if waiting for someone. I was very intrigued by her wonderful character-filled features so I primed my camera in the hope of getting a shot. Two or three attempts failed because people walked in front of me just at the time of taking the shot, but that's often the drawback when attempting candid photography. Suddenly the old lady delved into a plastic bag and began chewing away at something; I think it was fruit. I waited and waited, everytime a shot was lined up someone got in the way - but in the end patience was rewarded; a momentary gap appeared in the crowd and just at that time she moved to put some fruit into her mouth - Click!

A few seconds later Tricia joined me. It was a hot and sticky day, so we headed to a bar for a beer break!
