Yellow Monday

By AlanBW
More of a documentary image today, so I don't know if it will attract much interest.

It was taken in Bangkok on Christmas Day 2006, which was a Monday. Why are so many people in yellow shirts? Well, in Thailand each day of the week is associated with a colour: Sunday - red, Monday - yellow, Tuesday - pink, Wednesday - green, Thursday - orange, Friday - blue and Saturday - purple.

2006 marked the 60th anniversary of the reign of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, (also known as Rama IX). The King was born on 5th December 1927, which was a Monday, so that is his colour. What began as a government-encouraged idea to honour the King by wearing yellow shirts on Mondays during the year of celebration, has become a dress code for many Thais. On Mondays yellow shirts are worn by businessmen and civil servants, schoolchildren, assistants in shopping malls, stall holders on the street, bar and restaurant staff - in fact people from all walks of life - men, women and children. Not everyone joins in, as shown by the man in the white shirt in the above image.

Thousands of yellow shirts were produced in preparation for the 2006 celebrations and traders were warned not to overcharge for them. There are different designs with some saying, 'Long Live the King' and others saying, 'We Love the King'. Many, but not all, bear the royal crest.

Yellow is not the royal colour, it is the King's colour because he was born on a Monday. If, like me, the King had been born on a Sunday, Thailand would now be awash with red shirts, flags, banners, wrist bands and ribbons instead of yellow.

Revered by his people, King Bhumibol is the world's longest reigning monarch, having acceded to the throne of Thailand on 9th June 1946. The year 2007 sees the 80th birthday of the King, so it is highly likely that the practice of Yellow Monday will continue. During our recent stay in Thailand, a few visitors joined in by wearing yellow shirts on Mondays, including Tricia and I.

so vivid, like the warm colours and shadows.
I personally think it would be better with the man in the white shirt cloned out, it looks a bit distracting.
