This is very, very good work. It's a photo of contrasts, the thin willowy single 'shroom set in a lot of nice negative space, matched with the well lit cap and stem set against a dark background. This really sets it off, and gives you an emotional response to the struggle for growth. Keeping the colour at the top and the bottom also works, giving a nice border and edge to the scene.

One to be proud of and print it up.

I don't normally bother to stop and look at this sort of thing, but this has a really arresting quality, luminous and almost alien looking. Really well executed, nice one.

Aww, thanks guys. Myabe I shouldn't confess how many photos I took at different apertures to work out which ones would work...

Not deliberately, but the hermitage isn't marked on Google maps, and the satellite for that area is well zoomed out - one bit of forest looks much like the next lol

I really don't think map coordinates matter to much for individual mushrooms Smile Very nicely done though. Could I suggest either blending away the edge of the red area top right to black so it fades into the background, or adding a pixel or two of white border to decarcate the image from the background? Just a thought

Hope you got home safe and sound after your slight detour!

Always good to be different and a very effective shroom shot as well.

What a beauty Katy ! Love the way you have isolated it from the background and great use of the off camera flash. have just entered the same kind of mushroom in our club print competition.

Great to have spent time with you over the weekend and thanks for making that detour.
See you next year.

To quote a fello countryman "It's a cracker!" This is very fine indeed. Just make sure you get it in all the competitions. Why not try garden photographer of the year too. It's open until the end of November and you could put this in the plant portrait section. Mind you someone would have to help with the name.

Worth a try.

Beautiful seclusion. Lovely stuff.

Did you try a version without the flash of colour at the top?
