Stoat antics

By accipiter
Thank you for the CC's on my last macro uploads. Much appreciated.
I awoke grumpy from an afternoon nap on Monday and decided to go for a walk despite the weather (appalling!). Finally decided to drive away from the local area in case I grumped the neighbors and went to the RSPB site at Greylake - not many birds now but plenty of warblers and wagtails etc and a nice easy walk along wire covered wooden walkways over the wetland to a very comfortable hide. Hearing a slight commotion ahead I slowed down and as I turned the next corner there was a Stoat (Mustela erminia) rolling and scratching his back on the wire and not paying attention. I froze - disaster - my camera was in the case and not set up as I usually do this in the hide. I slipped back and got my camera organised with a long lens and went forward - no tripod unfortunately. He /she was still scratching and I stepped into the open and started to get some pics. I got a stern look (v2) but I was not moving so he/she had a good scratch (v1).
A second Stoat then appeared from under the walkway and the two of them proceeded to tear around in a most rambunctious manner ( V3 and V4 ), chasing and scrapping and having a wonderful time and coming to within three or four meters of me ( frozen still and begginning to ache) before standing up and giving each other a little kiss (V5) and then trotting off down the path. They do move at an amazing speed when in mock combat.
Considering it was a very cloudy day and the camera was hand held at a wide aperture and an ISO of 1600 I am happy to put up with these soft and noisy images of a delightful adventure.
I hope you like them. A

You lucky lucky beggar, I've lost count of the number of times I've been to Greylake and I've never seen one, guess that's karma for getting out there in the rain.....Well done you, although I'm still not happy Sad

20 Jul 2011 6:26PM about being in the right place at the right time. This is why my camera is ready to go as soon as I'm out of the car.......Really well done, under such difficult conditions I think these are amazing! I wouldn't have been able to stop my hands shaking long enough to get anything but a blur. I'm very, very jealous Grin

I always consider it a priviledge to see such wildlife antics, whether I have a camera at the ready or not. How lucky you were here Arthur, to not only witness this lovely behaviour, but to have your camera to hand. Bet you didn't remain grumpy for long. My favourite has to be V5 - so cute. Altogether a wonderful set of shots. Moira

A wonderful little story in both words and images! Reminds me of the times I used to watch from the farmhouse window as our local Stoat played jumping from one stepping stone to another, then turning around to do it all again, all at breakneck speed. I even discovered I apparently "speak the language", whistling for a non-responsive dog one day brought a different kind of animal to my summons! That little head turned from side to side each time I whistled as the Stoat stood only about 4m from me. They are wonderful little creatures, so full of character. By the way, V5 is my favourite in this great set.
