Barn Owl

By albi
After the disaster I had photographying the owls on saturday I took another trip over on sunday, only to have an even bigger disaster.
The AF on the camera kept losing the lock again and I missed some great shots..

So when I got home ( Pi**ed off ) I had a little play with some custom functions on the camera.
I switched the AI sevo or AF to the AE lock button C.Fn 04 and used C.Fn 17 to expand the AF point activation area.

Armed with the new settings I went back over tonight for another try, the weather was not great but the birds came out and I managed about 50 images with half having good sharpness.
A plus point was the camera seemed to track a lot better with the new set up.
Hopefully the weather will improve soon and I'll get some better shots.

Sorry for going on a bit... Smile

you have my admiration. I watched and waited night after night and got the odd image but none as good as this.

Don't understand your new settings but I'll have a look at my new 5D to see if I can replicate

Your perseverence has paid off with a great picture.

The only slight problem for me are the row of highlights behind the owl, but there isn't alot you can do about that.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Kim, these birds are all wild, but I must admit that this pair I've found just recently have no fear of man which makes it a lot easier for getting the shots.

Sabreur, yes I know what you mean.
The highlight in the b/g is a rape seed oil field.

Getting this wonderful shot was definitely worth the AF hassles you had - it's one of those 'wish I had more clicks' shots

I think maybe you're not bad at this photography lark. Another fine shot. Nick.
