In a Hover

By albi
I'm a bit disappointed in the hover shots I got of the Barn Owls the other day.
I had been shooting with the exposure at -1 as the sun was out and quite bright, so I didn't want to blow the whites.
But when I took these shots the sun had been covered by the clouds so as a result they came out quite dark, after lifting the levels in processing a fair amount of noise started to appear. So I've had to put the shots through neat image, which I'm not that keen on doing.
It was a stupid mistake to make and one I hope I don't live to regret, as these opportunities don't come along that often.

TECH: 1/800 F 5.6 EV -1 :-( ISO 320

Slight crop all round.

NOT SURE ABOUT THE LARGE VERSION.

Thanks for looking

I love the web of blurred branches as backdrop to the dramatic pose of the owl. Nice bit of movement at the wing tips.

since joining this forum I have only clicked portraits because that`s what I`m into.
I have seen many bird pics come and go and always fancied a go at that type of photography. I have bee watching Bill Ody and I`m amazed at some of the shots they get while filming.
I checked your work and I think it`s excellent. You should produce a book.
This owl shot is brill.

Very nice Tony. Wish it was mine so I wouldn't be too disappointed. Have you heard of the sunny f16 rule with exposure? Certainly worth looking at for whites of this nature. I'm trying to learn the rule, but have not seen a white bird since I started :o)

Excellent. Graeme

Tony dear , I think you have perfectionist issues... LOL, The shots you have of the Owls are all stunning, so if you never get the oppertunity to catch them again, You should be grinning from ear to ear....

Tony don't panic, this is still magic! The DOF and the way the owl kind of leaps from the image is just tremendous. I've enjoyed all of the owl shots but this is the best of all. Please keep them coming.

When I first saw the thumbnail the shot looked very faded. I was pleasantly suprised to open it up and find a really nice clear shot with nicely extended wings. All the more special for it been truly wild. Apologies for not always taking the time to comment.

All the best
