All about sunset (Dies the Light)

By Alciabides
A sunset in Winchester partially reflected off the roof of a playground train in which my son was playing. Tried but didn't succeed very well in getting the reflection on the black roof. Taken at f/14, 1/30th ISO 100, 14-42@28mm.

Full marks for trying something different, David, but it hasn't quite come off. Before I read your explanation, what jumped into my mind was that a tree had fallen across the pic, or maybe it was a bridge. It's a shame because the sunset looks lovely.

much more dramatic it goes to fantasy style. i think there is too much options how to modify this photo.

Hello, David. I agree with Catherine, the image looked odd until I read your explanation. It looks like a sunset with its reflection in water, but the straight black line through the centre just doesn't look like a riverbank, lol. The straight black area spoils an otherwise good image, and I like the silhouetted trees against the blue/mauve, gold and white sky. The darkness of the top of the sky, the black bottom line, and the trees all add good framing to the sunset and look like vignetting. But I felt the bottom had to go, so cropped it in my modification. Also, the dark sky area is hiding the tree silhouettes, which are a nice feature. In my modification, I straightened the image using the top of the straight black line, then cropped bottom and right so that we have sky and trees only. I then lifted the shadows to reveal the tree branches, and deepened the highlights near the "horizon", finishing with a touch of contrast and saturation to enhance the colours. Taking another look at your original, I did a second modification to try to emulate the vignetted look. The choice is yours. Although the roof reflection wasn't entirely successful, you still have a very attractive picture after a few tweaks.

Pamels's mod has found the true potential of an already very good image. - gary
