First Ferrari

By Aldo Panzieri
This is the first car shot I ever did. I was fifteen. I had a two and a quarter copy of a Rolliflex. My Dad gave my uncle a lift to Beverly Hills so that my uncle could pick up his Ferrari after getting it serviced. A road race was about to be held in Smogville, one of the first road races in California. I wandered among all the race cars being tuned up for the big race. It was late, and the only person there was the manager. No press was allowed in, but he had a heart, and let the kid shoot some pictures. This car was lit by a sky light, and was a perfect shot for a beginer. The negative was thin, but fifty years later, I knew how to get a quality image out of it.

Wow - I already thought this was good when I saw the photo, but knowing the circumstances I'm even more impressed!

A sleek, beautiful ghost from the past. A wonderful story, this is how life-long passions are created.

A first-class photograph of a most beautiful car, certainly one of the loveliest racers ever made. And what a fabulous story, too: my younger self would have been full of envy.
(Although I think it's actually a Porsche RSK or 718; Masten Gregory and Dan Gurney used to race them over here.)
One of those images where the deep shadows accentuate the visible lines, modelling them into a visual feast. Chiaroscuro at its best.
Sincerest compliments!
