The suburbs of a city the size of Los Angeles might seem likely to be urban, but there is ma lot of small town America to be found there. Monterey Park is where I did most of my growing up. It is eleven miles from Downtown Los Angeles, but it might as well be two hundred. One of the small town traditions there is Play Days, annual parade of C list celebrities, and a carnival at the local park, known historically as the first flight of a glider in California from the top of the hill behind the park, It is also known as the site of the biggest rally of the Klu Klux Klan, who are most likely spinning in their graves at the sight of a population that has almost every minority in it. This is one of only two pictures that I've taken in fifty years, that I didn't have to crop and color correct in five minutes. Both of these pictures have been fussed over for a decade. I finally think I've got this one right.
