2013 Lexus sedan

By Aldo Panzieri
Car photography has changed a great deal over the last fifty years. In the forties and early fifties, cars were photographed on movie sound stages, and retouchers took out dozens of reflections from the hard edged movie lights. In the sixties, soft light sources replaced the sound stages, and natural light wit some assistant became the norm.

As a young assistant, I soaked up the best education you could get. Only two of the fifty photographers I worked for were car photographers I worked for but they were the two biggest car photographers in the world. icky McGuire was seven foot four and had a sharp temper. I'm glad I worked so hard that he never had reason to yell. mickey was the first car photographer to move out of the sound stage, and into a regular photographic studio.

Gil Smith was a child actor who grey up and did some major car ads There are only a hundred first level car photographers in the world, and a few have buckled from the stress, and killed themselves.

This is a Lexus, not in a murky studio, but sitting in a parking lot in afternoon sun softened by some thin clouds. Having learned what light can do to steel, I stopped, shot a few frames and then did a little computer work. I darkened the image quite a bit, then raised the highlights, hit the sharpen button and then juggled the tones until I was happy. sometimes I soften the image, and then sharpen it to get a soft sharp effect. I don't use Photoshop. I have it, somebody gave it to me, but it's been sitting on the shelf a long time. I us Picasa 3. It's free, and very fast. When I started restoring negatives of my most important family pictures, Photoshop took an hour and a half per negative. Picasa took three minutes. I hope this image is interesting. It's the rear door of the Lexus . The dark horizontal line is actually there, it just doesn't show in normal light.
