Neowise Comet as seen from Lincolnshire

By AlexandraSD
This was my last chance to capture this natural beauty before i have a very random week of night shifts this week.

I vividly recall Halle Bopp in 1999, that comet lit the sky up all winter, it was a marvellous sight to behold. Whilst driving last week, i noticed Neowise in the north sky, but I was coming back from that carwash shoot and didnt stop to capture it, thinking ill do it tomorrow... It got cloudy and remained so until tonight. So off i went out at 2am.

I thought i would go out to sutton bridge in lincolnshire, only 7 miles or so away, its right on the edge of the coast, very little in the way of light pollution round there.. i actually had to ask a security guard at the port to check i was on the right road as i never been down there at night and usually use the lighthouse to navigate round those parts, but you cant see it at night, anyway off i went, found a quiet spot, set the camera up, and right away i saw a perseid meteor streak across the sky, so i aimed at the 7 sisters constellation, aka the perseids lol bugger all, didnt capture one meteor...

Bored after a few minutes, i decided to photograph another patch of sky nearby. there were some clouds near the horizon and i was sure i wouldnt see that ******* comet neowise... but i did!

I took a photo, previewed it and noticed a star with a smudge!!! roger me, i thought, thats the comet... i did let out a whoop of delight or three, in fact i screamed "yes" so loudly, i was sure that security guard might hear lol when done, i stopped to show that guard the comet and he was absolutely flabbergasted, and i pointed to where it is, right behind him, but you cant see it with the naked eye well, i only noticed it after i took the photo, with a longish exposure, thats how dim it was, though the sky was not as dark as it is at midnight, if i went earlier i would have gotten a better image, but i wasnt really after an award winning astro image, just a nice record shot, and i got a couple in the end Smile

So living in Lincolnshire does have some benefits - lack of light pollution for one.Wink
Try not to scare too many security guards with your screaming.Tongue

Where i was positioned between the rivers nene and welland, overlooking the wash, with lincolnshire to my left and norfolk to my right, looking out to sea the first land mass next is Norway, so yeah, quite clear skies, the northern lights can often be seen here and on the north norfolk coast, only ever seen a green slither once though, that was near Blakeney point!

The only reason i stopped at the guards hut again was because i didnt want him thinking some nutter is messing around on the docks when a ship was in port, but his face when i returned and showed him the image was priceless, i think i made his quiet night a bit more interesting!
