Iraq Burning

By aliengrove
Smoke over Iraq, north-west of Baghdad. A normal sight from the airspace over Iraq. The pattern of the smoke looks to me like a dark bird flying over the landscape.

I hope this is an old shot, or is this still burning for some reason?

No, is is very recent. It was taken on 3rd December this year. I fly over Iraq quite regularly and this is a fairly normal sight. How much is from military or insurgent action is anyones guess, but I expect one or the other makes up most of it, because we don't see this anywhere else in the Gulf. The plume top right appeared to be coming from a burning oil well.

A very striking image.
