Yes, he did, many times over throughout the day. Actually, although the trees were at the end of the runway, I believe a couple of factors have raised the "thrill" aspect of the image.

The first shooting with the 500mm lense, is the compression factor. Secondly, although not seen in this image, there is a gap in the trees slightly to the left of where the aircraft is. That is an explanation for the dipped wing as he steers towards the gap.

All that said, it was still thrilling to see them climb. Just to the right and above the undercarriage, you might detect the heat waves from the exhaust illustrating how hard the engine was actually working.
