Heath Fritillary

By tomcat
This is a Heath Fritillary Melitaea athalia, one of Britain's rarest butterflies.

In fact it was the demise of the Large Blues in 1979, that prompted the action to save these wee beauties from extinctionSmile
Well worth suffering a swollen arm (allergic bite reaction), to nail these beautiful butterflies

I am led to believe that they are late in emerging this year, but I was fortunate to find several of them, in the most unlikeliest of placesWink

Many thanks to Anthony (zapar40) for his GEA given to yesterday's young Peregrine and also to Mike (mikesmith), Annette (annettep38) & Luisa (Luda),
for their very generous User awards

Sharp and well exposed, showing off the colours well.

A cracking close up of this rare butterfly, you've captured its wings markings and patterns in such intricate detail and its colours quite beautifully. The Big O will blow a gasket when he sees this as we spent an hour and a half toiling up and down the steep slopes of Collard Hill in Somerset in vain pursuit of the elusive large blue.
