Staring

I don't know what you think, but I think that my Cuban images lacked a bit of grittiness, so with the idea of seeing whether a bit of grittiness would improve them, I'm trialling Topaz Adjust. It seemed that yesterday's image worked, but the processing was quite subtle. Today, I may have gone over the top - so I've uploaded three versions:
v1: the mildest Topaz treatment
v2: the original processed in Lightroom
v3: probably WAY OTT - but I quite like it. Tongue
My favourite is v1 and I'd be interested - if you have the time and energy - to learn what you think.
Thanks for your time and for looking!
Ann

V2 for me. Some places just don't need added processing. Not that I don't like it, but I just prefer the original.

I like V 1 best, followed by V 3, Ann: V 2 does nothing for me as so much detail seems to have been lost, especially so since you were looking for a bit of grittiness. Interesting that Chris says "V 2 for me".
The composition itself is great, the old man sitting alongside but just a wee bit away from the car and his apparent dejection and seems to echo the state of the old car.

I really like Topaz...it is very versatile once you get the hang of it.
I like v1, but I think v3 represents the emotion and flavor of the situation better.
I think you will enjoy using that program. Did you get version 5?

I'm afraid I just like them all Ann, each has it's own merits and each is equally as appealing. Very well done indeed

First: the composition is superb, the left-right imbalance being for me the whole point (and matched by the lopsided appeal of the old car itself Smile).
Second: all three versions work for me, each in its own way. V3 is OTT, as you say, but not unacceptably so: it has instant impact, suitable for a poster perhaps, though I'm not altogether that it makes an entirely positive impression. V1 relieves the dark shadow beneath the car's bonnet and adds definition to the radiator and the walls in the background. Like a good dose of USM without added artefacts!
No particular objections to V2, I must say, though V1 is my favourite. The subject is after all reasonably gritty to start with Smile

I like how you have used and subtle--ized the highlights in v3---

But, it is my feeling that it is your image, yours to present---

and this business with the monitors is troubling me---what i see may not be what you see---------- etc.

The composition is brilliant - it balances. There seems to be an uneasy stand-off between the man and the car, both trying to ignore each other.
V1 for me. It brings out the textures rather nicely. V3 is just a step too far for me.

V1 - for me Ann - you have some good contrast going on there.( looks slightly HDR ish though)
V2 - to be honest despite having been in Lightroom it looks like a flat/dull RAW file.
V3 - a step too far Smile
Have you thought of adding grain/noise to these images yourself instead of depending on Topaz.????

V1, V3 and then V2 for me Ann. I like the exposure best on this one with the slightly grittier appearance.

I like the relationship between the man and the car and the way that although his posture and demeanour separates him from the car the blue reflected on the cars screen and bonnet balances with the blue of his vest.
One of the best of your Cuba shots uploaded IMO.

1, 3, 2 Ann. v2 has so much detail missing than comes out in v1, and if you hadn't mentioned it I sure people would not have realised you used Topaz. Superb composition, and the man pointing one way and the wheels the other is excellent.

A difficult choice, each version has its own immense appeal. V1 for the revealed detail just scrapes in front.

Maybe.

I mentioned a composer and his music in a PM yesterday. I also put his names the wrong way round. James Oswald it is.

I don't think V3 is OTT at all...but my favourite is definitely V1. The reason may be linked to my monitor, but for me, I like the light and definition on the dude in V1. Parts of him and the car go a wee bit too much into shadow in V3. But V3 is a very very very close second Smile

Love everything about it! Envy! The 3 holes on the side front wing might suggest another Buick. Both car and man look seriouisly down at the mouth.

Ann, I think for the most part I'm with you. V2 (the original) is a bit flat and it needs the processing we see in V1. However, my favorite is V3. It is not OTT. It is an artistic statement and represents your vision. AND -- it is along the lines of my tastes and philosophies about creating images that convey something beyond what the straight forward photo presents.

I fear I'm not expressing myself very succinctly here.
Outside of that, I have to re-iterate what Jenn said. We are all looking at this on a wide variety of monitors and what I see is not exactly what anybody else sees.
-=\Walter
PS -- I just read danbrann's comment and I agree. Stay true to your own vision.

I'm between versions....a combination of V1 & 2 would suit me better.
I like the HDR effect on the car in V1 but prefer the more gentle apperance of the chap & the little bit of wall behind him in V2.
V3...yep a wee bit over the top but I bet it looks the best out of the three in print.

V1 for me, Ann.
It looks like man and car have had a falling out. Maybe the car refused to start. Its wheels are turned away from the man, as if it is in a huff, and its expression is definitely that of one miserable vehicle. The man has distanced himself from the offending rust-bucket and looks really cheesed off.
Mmm V1 as the processing is subtle & does suit the subject .. The composition stands up on it's own of course.. Man & car sooo complimentary.. A great series Ann

When a member specifically asks for opinions on an image it is only polite to answer the request. It's nothing to do with being an 'art critic' it's about an attempt to be helpful - you were not !!!

V1 has the detail and the wonderful light, " a little is a lot" when using software to enhance I find. Love the warmth in the light and I see the number is back in this shot. Lovely work, you have opened a sea of comments by that simple question Ann.
