365 Day 113 - One of the 'Quatro Mori' Livorno

We decided to chill out today having had a fairly full day yesterday so rather than a trip to Florence, which we have visited before, we wandered into Livorno and around the canal area, known as 'Venice', then along to the other end of the town to have a leisurely lunch at one of the open air restaurants. Livorno is a working port and there is nothing grand or beautiful about it but one of the things I found interesting was a statue at the port gates dedicated to Ferdinand Medici of the 'Quattro Mori' or the 4 Moors. By all accounts 2 real prisoners were used as models for the Mori, or pirates who were chained to the railings. They had to return several times to sit for the artist and were then set free.
