365 Day 191 - Battle of Tewkesbury
13 Jul 2014 9:43PM Views : 305 Unique : 241On May 4th 1471, the battle of Tewkesbury took place between the Lancastrians and Yorkists. This was apparently one of the most decisive battles of the wars of the roses with the Yorks under King Edward IV not only beating the Lancastrian but killing both the Lancastrian heir to the throne and many Lancastrian noblemen.
Each year in July, a medieval fayre and battle re-enactment takes place on the historic battlefield and although we have lived in Gloucestershire for nearly 30 years, this is the first time we have gone and it is fantastic! Apparently this is the largest annual battle re-enactment in Europe and attracts participants and visitors from far and wide which explains the hour long queue to get into the car park. I have so many photos from the day that it is hard to choose what to post today so I'm uploading 3 which maybe gives a tiny flavour of the day. Brilliant afternoon although we didn't see half of the medieval village which is part of it. Next year we will be better organised, go earlier and won't book anything for the Sunday in case we want to go back!
Just discovered that I can post photos side by side!!!
