"I'M WAITING"I really like what you have going here - just a couple of thoughts: the bright window shade at the top is interfering with the hat - I don't think cropping from the top down a ways on the hat would spoil the image. Secondly, just a bit more light on the right side of the man's face would improve the look; you've almost got some perfect Rembrandt lighting going here. I know screens differ but on mine, the blacks look clipped.

And then there were noneCropping down beyond the lights at top would be an improvement; they could also be cloned out. The street and curb give context of place. The large concrete block along with the two posters in the window create a strong triangle in the shot, giving it some dynamic. The block shape also echoes the square shapes of the windows. Finally, that block gives foreground interest, something I feel is important in this image, bringing us into the frame.

I feel street images need a bit more leniency - one doesn't have the luxury of a studio with time to pose one's subjects. Moment in time captured perfectly James, don't mess around too much with it.

Holding on

Holding onHi there looking out at us! A super wildlife shot Mark. Love the direct look - nice detail and light in the eyes.


The only think I think might improve on this is the part of the frog's foot sticking out behind the plant stem - it doesn't have a distinct shape and only appears as a very light area in the composition - as I see it Smile

VikkiThey grow up way too quickly Ian. The lighting is really nicely done here - smile is lovely, and the direct eye gaze, catchlights in those beautiful eyes. Like the red Harvard t-shirt against the black background - all in all a very catching portrait. My only small quibble is that her arm is cut off at the elbow joint. I got berated for this a few times at NYIP - don't cut off at people's joints.
Hope you had a great weekend Ian - we worked our b**ts off but survived.........

Tea?It's very good - reminds me of my mother's hands, even down to the cup pictured here.

A little bit of burning at the top would tone down the portion of the neck showing, and put the attention more on the hands.

Kayden and KeagynI really liked this shot when I saw it, but thought a more square crop would suit it. Also, it is a bit dark on my screen, especially in the lower section.

I chose to not sharpen the images as I like the way it looks now - more a feeling of a regular film capture.

I use NIK software for a lot of my work. Did selective lightening of the clothing area with Viveza 2 and then applied soft as well as regular contrast to show a bit more detail. Finally a sepia toning to give it a more ageless look. The second mod is vignetted.

* Tunnel Vision' *This truly is a sad sight - I see homeless people on the street here in Norway these days. I like both of these shots, and keep wondering what they might look like in mono. For me, v2 is more dramatic, and I was thinking if you cropped that one up to the dark area on the bottom it might change the feel of it. What do you think?

Hamming!Great shot - I also like the placement in the frame here. His expression gives me the feeling that he will be stepping back into the frame, so extra room on the right was not needed here. Very well isolated from the background, good use of aperture.
Focus on the face might be a bit soft, but it doesn't bother me much here.

100 Foot FountainReally like the pov, for some reason the lines along with the low angle pulls me right in towards the central building. Don't know what that structure poking into the frame at the right edge is, but I'd personally like to see it gone.

Hope you'll upload one in future taken when the fountain is working.

The SailorI like the subject matter, the composition, the mood. However, it is rather flat with a limited tonal range. I would work on that and up your contrast to give this more visual punch.

Maybe TomorrowI think in most instances it is preferable to shoot a portrait at eye-level. Here you have shot from a vantage point above the person. With this close a portrait I also think that some eye contact can engage the viewer.

Your blacks are too dark, I would say clipped. For light, meter the face for your exposure, and use a reflector to fill in the dark side.

Another approach for a male portrait is dramatic lighting, having one side of the face more in shadow than this, and the other side lit.

I find that Nik's Silver Efex 2 software is excellent at converting images to mono. Their online tutorials can help you achieve a professional looking conversion, getting a good range of tones, enabling adjustments in parts and not the whole image. Much easier than using layers in Photoshop. It is a plug-in for Lightroom as well as Photoshop.

Number 12 stands still !I agree that this is noisy ( I generally don't care too much about noise), especially in the background where the player is located. Don't know why you chose f/20 for this. I agree that opening up the aperture and reducing the ISO would have rendered a finer image. If I'm not too off with my math (doing this quickly in my head) you could have shot at about f/5.6 at ISO somewhere around 600-400. I reckon f/20 is one of those 1/3 stops on your camera?

Aside from that - I do like the idea of this shot, and the composition. Hoping you will give it another try!

Another solution here is to convert it to mono and add a bit more grain.

Nicely exposed on the white background. I like the pose, direct look, and the attention to detail.

I think a shot like this could be improved if you used a landscape format here. For me, the cut off legs are a distraction. For this kind of pose, I personally feel that landscape format is best, and for a standing pose, portrait format is the best choice.

PoinsettiaI think for me the choice will be mono here - I know I also tend to be mono addicted at times, but here mono enhances the shapes of the leaves. I thought initially this was a red poinsettia and that you had applied a red filter in conversion to make it white. I guess you could apply a yellow filter to make it even whiter if you wanted.
