Comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy)

By AntHolloway
Taken from the back garden this morning before dawn, Comet C/2013 R1 (Lovejoy) is currently close to the cluster of stars known as Praesepe or the Beehive.

It is heading closer to the Sun with a closest approach at the end of December and can be seen in a pair of binoculars.

It appears green due to the presence of cyanogen (CN) and diatomic carbon (C_2) being illuminated by ultraviolet light from the Sun and undergoing resonant fluorescence.
