Solitude

By ARJones
In Feb 2007 I visited Havana, Cuba on business and managed to grab a few photo's. I visited again earlier this month and took with me a few 6x4 prints of some characters I shot last time to give to them should I see them again.

I saw the back of an elderly lady going into a doorway that I thought was possibly a lady I had photographed. I showed the 6x4 print to a man in the street who nodded and pointed into the doorway. I went inside, it was quite dark and led to several rooms which were occupied by different people. I was directed to the very back of the building where a door was shut to - I knocked and pushed it open and the elderly lady was sat on her bed. I handed her the picture and she half smiled(you can just see the photo next to the TV).

I indicated my camera and took some shots very quickly with just a single bulb illuminating the room. It was like a surreal intrusion into another world.

Thanks for the comments so far - I took three pictures the first two were just head and shoulders of the lady and then I saw the reflection and just grabbed one last wide angle shot - I love the reflection of her in the TV. On the right hand side behind the chair is a toilet - don't think it was actually plumbed in though !!

Hi Andy. This image of yours is simply outstanding. So glad that I poked around tonight and came across it. Even the sagging bed was divine intervention. I salute your determination to get the print back to her, and look what transpired from that unselfish gesture - a print that rates right up there in the photo journalist / people favourites on this site. Well done. Andre
