Thank you for visiting my corner of EPZ and welcome to my humble abode.
Please come in and look around. I hope you enjoy looking at my portfolio.
Any comments that you may have, are greatly appreciated.

If you require any information on how I have created an image, please feel free to contact me. Iím only too happy to share my little bit of knowledge. To note, I tend not to use a great deal of processing but again, Iím happy to discuss my workflow using Lightroom and Photoshop.

Quote:Technical is not enough on its own. I hope to envisage how my final image should look (the artistic part) and then use technical skills to achieve that. Ideally the art comes in from the planning and capturing the image right through the editing process. Unfortunately my artistic side is not that strong and though I am strong technically it is not an advantage. At my club, the most successful photographers are the artistic based who know enough technology to achieve what they want.

I'm with Dave, envisaging how the final image should look (the artistic part) and then use technical skills to achieve that.

    I quite agree Dave

Quote:I would say that someone else's suggestions may not suit your son-in-law, as I believe, to be truly comfortable with a camera you really have to feel it and see how easy it is to 'fit' into your hand and into your way of working. It is something that everyone who wants to start the hobby/activity of taking photographs has to find for themselves. Physical construction of the human body plays some part in this, size of hands, eyesight, manouverability, as well as strength - can they manage heavy weights easily or is there any physical disability which may make a smaller lighter camera more usable. How quickly could they adapt the skills of a point and shoot to a complicated dslr for instance. Mirrorless cameras are very light and easily carried, but as they are a new development they do have many other new aspects which may make them not so suitable. As it is not a good time to be going into shops and trying stuff out it might be useful if he can hire a few different cameras - models, types, weights - to see what he is comfortable with, or wait until life is back to something like normality. Just my thoughts.

    Definitely how I see it.
Dare I say it, there is not a lot between the respective level cameras of the different companies, so it is most important to see what is comfortable in hand. It has to sit comfortably and be easy to use. Think thin fingers against podgy fingers.

I once helped a nephew to compare. I had a Sony but couldn't cope with the entry level version and yet the equivalent Pentax sat nicely in the hand.

Quote:My memory is that this started when a prominent site member objected loudly to the site's choice of ECs and HCs, and threatened to flounce off. Pete, the site founder, said 'If you think you can do better, give it a go for a week.' Which he did - and then he flounced off anyway. So the idea was fairly improvised, but it stuck.

Exactly...and that time the gallery featuring GE Awarded images was different, now being a GE, we are sharing one gallery which is open at the home page attracting viewers mainly outsiders as well as the casual members or viewers of this site, my confusion is being a GE what will be my duty, of a judge or of an Editor as the name suggests, and here is the difficulty...and amid all the difficulty i love the concept...i placed my query to all of you friends, how you are enjoying it...

For me, you will be judging images but it is as an Editor, Somnath.

I enjoy it but since the pandemic, there seem to be a lot less images

I look for something that stands out and appeals to me, we all have our own opinions but I do find that being a GE helps to focus the mind to study different genres/images. Images don't necessarily have to be technically perfect for me so long as there is a strong emotion in the image.

All of my awards are for the images not photographers so it is possible that someone may get more than one award in a week but hey that's how the cookie crumbles and if someone is consistently posting high quality images then that should be recognised. It also means that there may be quite few awards or none.

My modus operandi is to go through the gallery and shortlist, returning later to study the images in more depth and with fresh eyes, some will be lucky and receive a GE, there may be some that don't quite make that but I will give my personal award and some that will be overlooked.

I certainly wouldn't class being Guest Editor as hard work but it is time consuming.
On a couple of occasions in my last stint, I did comment on images and explained that in my opinion with minor improvements that an image would have got my GE.

    It is certainly worth doing

Colleen, can you put me down for another week please. Also if you have any short notice withdrawals, I may be able to help out as I have plenty of time on my hands

Thank you for your week as Editor. Great selection. Iíve put you down for the first available opening which is 28 September. Iíll keep you in mind if anyone cancels in the mean while.

Ok, 28 September pencilled in my diary
