oh brilliant - visited the New Forest many times - great shot - as a pure amateur I would be over the moon with this shot - so I will let the more experienced photographers give critique - cheers Jean

Hi Alan,

A well caught image where the stag looks absolutely in the wild which is where I imagine is exactly where it was. There is a little overexposure on the left sidebut you get what you can in these circumstances however, you have caught the stag quite sharp.

The DoF is a little too big here I think and with a combination of that and the stag being close to the ferns has not thrown the background as out of focus as I'd like to have seen. The problem with that is that the rich green background that is in focus competes with the stag a little for my attention. Also that thistle in the front centre also is a little bit of a distraction for me and I would clone it out.

Composition wise, I think you've done as well as you could and a little more catch light in the stags eye's would have just made it that bit better.

Otherwise a great shot and well done

I take it the "oh dear" was for the pun, as the shot is stunning.

Personally, I love it exactly as it is. I have no problem with showing the environment & putting the subject in context. I'm not at all distracted by the ferns or thistle, I think they are a nice addition to the shot.

But then I'm less easily distracted than some. I know what the subject is, & don't feel it needs to be hammered home to me.

The colours give plenty of separation between deer & background. Had this been converted to mono, I could see Alan's point, as they appear to be a similar tone, & may have been less well defined.

As Jean says, I'd be well pleased with a shot like this.

Still, horses for courses, eh?

This is very nice and an excellent composition. If I have to criticise a little, the highlights on the animals lighter fur are slightly burnt out. Possibly a little less exposure and some lightening of shadows in software - but - that's nit picking.

excellent wildlife shot, animal in good position and environment well shown. Highlights a touch overdone but detail elsewhere.
Wish I had taken it!!!

thanks for all your comments, also noticed slight blowout on the light fur and thought I managed to tone down most of it using levels.

I think the depth of field on this works very well. The first `row' of ferns provides context is sufficiently differend from the deer in colour and texture that the deer stands out perfectly. The rest is pleasantly blurred. Excellent shot.
