the eyes are impressively sharp and really grab you

the processing is a little sinister - the lack of saturation and the brownish toning all adds to a non-typical shot of a baby, which I like.

looks like it may have been abandoned or has lost its mummy

I usually choose warm color tone for baby photos Smile

Yeah, the tones do make it slightly sinister - perhaps a little 'doll-like'. Very eye catching though.

Got to be careful here. Wish you had left it alone. I suspect a technically excellent baby shot existed before you began playing about.

Hello, Mark. I noticed that you had put up a second version and felt that I could do a modification on this one. Your first version seems to have received a Marmite response. Part of the trouble with this image is the uneven light, the left is darker than the right. The blue eyes are beautiful, though. Your first processing of your niece has accentuated the natual marks on her face and I feel that it has also made her look puzzled and unhappy, whereas the second version doesn't give me that impression at all. In my modification I cropped both sides, adjusted highlights/shadows to balance out the light, adjusted levels slightly, sharpened the eyes and added a softening effect.

I don't think the tones make it look sinister but rather ... poetic; or if so, it really doesn't matter - it is your view on this and who says we should take only happy colourful photos of kids? That is why I find it very expressive and able to tell a story. And I think this is great. The photo reached its purpose - of transmitting a message.
