Mischief

By Badger
One of many from a recent photographic shoot-out between six photographers in Newcastle City Centre.

Shot around noon with a bright overcast sky, 580EX II was off camera to the right and had a grid to direct the pool of light.

ISO 100 - 1/250 @ f1.8

Hi matt, great idea, and quite a good result.

I don't know if this was intended, so take this with a pinch of salt. I would love the photo more if the girl took up more of the height of the frame so there isn't as much dead space above your subject.

Also the shadow behind her I find distracting. I would solve both of these problems by bringing your model forward, using a separate strobe for background lighting and another for camera right lighting the subject. This will also separate the subject better. (Using a smaller aperture to keep focus).

One last pointer... (sorry)... Try to have you light coming from the opposite way the subject is facing to avoid any pesky reflections in her glasses.

However, Im nit-picking, its a great photo!

Thanks for the feedback Will, but this image was set up with the model deliberately next to the wording on the wall, bringing her forward would lose that interaction, also as it was shot on location multiple strobes were not an option.

With regards to the height of the dead space, look carefully and you will see a subtle circular line painted on the wall, which is mimicking the fall of light from the gridded flash.

I appreciate your time to comment, and do consider your points valid.

Well for me I don't mind the shadow from her as, being one of those urban/gritty environment shots it all just helps to fuse the overall image. Its not overlit, though personally I'd like to see it a little darker (for more back street mood) and the colours are a nice mix of unexciting...just right for this pseudo fashionesque dark shot. Only thing I don't like about this Matt, is the closed eyes, the sunglasses (I just personally don't like these in photos) and the flash reflection in the left side of them.
I think I know where you took the pic too M8 Smile

Hi Matt, good to see your work again, like your comp and the graffiti too. Well set up.
Might just of cloned out the flash reflection in the glasses.
Regards Richard.
