spotty and furry

By CarolG
Saw this single ant-like critter in the pool yesterday, sheltering from the wind. I requested him to crawl onto a leaf for some images, but unfortunately I had picked the wrong leaf, which was very smooth, and he couldn't get a proper grip Smile. However we eventually managed to finish the photo shoot, and I hope from these images someone can give me an ID for him.
NB: The nearest I can find to him is the velvet ant, or cow ant, but the spots are red, and not white as on this critter.

Have never before seen a hairy ant, don't know that I want to either Smile All three of these shots are just superb and I'm glad to give my UA, which indeed, I feel I could, and should, with all your uploads, the quality being so continuously first class!

It looks like an ant who's dressed up for a night on the town. I've never seen anything like it before, maybe you've discovered a new species, we shall name Antus Carolius...GrinGrin

V1 in particular is very well composed, the antennae exploring the frame.
I'm imagining it flipped upside down, I think that could work to.
