Well, you did it well, though I wonder if the clarity of the detail on the near parts of the bridge work against achieving your goal.You could try softening the foreground. Another option would be to use the portrait setting in the "Shooting Menu" if you have such a setting. It would be a way of getting a softer result, on my camera anyway.

I like the effect. The clarity in the foreground adds to the feeling of depth.
What does spoil the shot is the yellow sign half way along the bridge. I would suggest cloning this out.
