Dubious nest material

By Bernice010
A pair of swans have made their nest at the beginning of the flood relief channel. Unfortunately they have used a lot of the rubbish that floats in the channel to build their nest.

To top it all, someone thought the swan might be hungry and has thrown a load of bread down beside it!

I couldn't get a good shot of the swan, it doesn't make such a good photo from above and my camera doesn't have enough zoom to take a picture from behind. Perhaps someone else could have a go?

24/4/07 update - although I saw the female standing over 4 eggs the other day, when I looked again yesterday she had abandoned the nest with only 2 eggs in it. The parents were busy picking up bits of grass in a different area so I don't know whether they will make a new nest. I'm making a pessimistic assumption that people dropped rubbish on the swans so they decided it wasn't a good place for a nest.

I'd like to say that I like this shot, but I can't. Technically it's fine - you've got the swan beautifully, you've got it doing the housework, and the whole nest is there. But when I see this shot I feel really sad and angry. How can people be so ignorant as to throwing their rubbish away so thoughtlessly. I also wonder if the cygnets will be safe - not only have they got the potentially lethal plastics to avoid, but the accessability by human interferance. A rather sad shot of today's society, thank you for sharing.

I too agree with Karen it is such a sad state for a so called nation of animal lovers to be in. Absolutely brilliant shot for perhaps making people think a little bit before they chuck that icecream wrapper on the ground this weekend

An intresting shot, with a good story. ... I had thought humans were improving slightly... Well caught!
