So the issue lies with the original colour shot Bernie. Judging from the EXIF data, the light was low (its a miracle you got a decent shot at 1/10 sec at 155mm!)

The white balace seems all wrong, - its very heavily saturated with red and yellow, either due to processing, of the fact the light was too low. It would have benefitted the shot quite a bit if you had used you flash as a fill flash here I think. Using this shot as a basis for a mono conversion would produce poor results.

Ive tried to modify the colour shot to get it looking as right as I can, - but its not entirely correct, - and the mod2 mono conversion works quite well as you can see.

Hope this helps,

Yes, it's your original. This is a nice image and well composed but it is very orange indeed. Possibly tungsten light and the white balance has either got it wrong or you or not set on auto. Unless sure of light temperature, ALWAYS leave white balance on auto.

Your mono conversion points to a direct conversion without user control. All that orange/red will give a very flat grey result. You need to use the channel conversion tool. Will try myself, but might be difficult.

Right, I've posted my mod, which I think is much closer to a technical mono conversion. The original was almost entirely consisting of the red channel, this has much reduced red, 48 green and a touch of blue. It also needed a lot of sharpening due to your 1/10 second.

It remains a very pleasant portrait and, once you crack the technical bit, you are well on your way.

By the way, Photozine team, the 'right click' copy feature does not seem to work now.

Wow - yeah agree too much warmth in the white balance - looks like he's beein on a sunbed Wink
My mod has reduced saturation and temp with slight sharpen and contrast increase. Darkend shadows and slight increase h/l.

Yeah its part of the new V5 feature list, you now need to click on Modifications - download photo and then it'll open a new window where you can do the right click and save thingy
