Folkestone Harbour Station HDR

By Bevy
I grew up in Folkestone and despite thinking I knew every inch of the place, this bit slipped my radar and I first saw it about a year ago! I had been helping my husband find locations for model shoots and we had heard the station was abandoned but accessible.
Walking down the tracks to the far end which still had the Victorian pillars intact, you could see a hint of how fabulous the place would have looked in all its glory, and perfect for the Orient Express which ran here until 2008, but as you can see from my picture, since it was closed in 2009 it has declined rapidly, in fact a re-visit this year found it in an even worse state, the Victorian end now securely fenced off (elf an safety you know) and the vandals have ripped everything that is possible off the rest.

My shot looks back down the curve of the platform, with the newer end of the station out of sight, I wanted to give it a heavy process to bring out the decay and settled on HDR.

This certainly is a most interesting capture for textures and colour of what it used to be.
The shot still holds impact though even through the rust and grime. A picture that you
will for ever hold best in your album……Thanks for sharing……..

Good HDR processing skills show in this image, with just the right amount of HDR applied.

I've come back to this image a few times now, I like the processing, the POV and the structure itself with the rust. good capture.

I remember passing through here at the head of a school exchange group in 1980 or '81 on the way to the Paris region by hovercraft and coach. I am amazed to see the deterioration, even more so since you say it closed only three years ago.

You have made excellent use of the perspective. Although the bulk of the overhead crane and other gear on the right looms large, the more satisfying element aesthetically is the colonnade with its crumbling textures and the tantalising curve at the end. The composition ensures that this is the part that holds our eye. Very nicely done.

I'm not wild about HDR, I like the mystery of shadows and dark corners, and HDR seems to probe into them too much for my taste. The vote is for the composition, using that tower thingy on the right to balance the dominant lines on the left; and the grey/rust tonal balance which is perfect.
