Sign of the times

By bgrunes
Hi
Taken during my Photographic beginners course in Manchester earlier in the year, its a road sign thrown in to canel, the image has just been rotated to help lose its identity. Just trying something different comments always welcome.

I feel that generally a picture should speak for itself regarding description, as often as possible, but this I cannot fathom even with your description. the angled 'crease' is at a guess the water line but your treatment makes it difficult to ascertain so it is more like an abstract to me. So maybe a little cropped from the bottom and you might just have a piece of wall art.

Any particular reason why you used maximum aperture here? It would have been better for you to have stopped down at least one stop if not two. So taking my abstract design into account, not to bad a shot.

I like your title, very clever, and the sign makes an interesting abstract, Brian, but I think it has sufficient curiosity value to warrant presenting it as taken. I rotated the image right, and I quite like the way it looks. By excluding the canal bank from your frame, and just showing reflections, it looks intriguing, but it's the road sign and its reflection that intrigue even more. It almost looks like a shark's fin in the waterGrin!
The strength of the lines on the sign, and the rippled reflections are also good elements.
I am left wondering if there is any wording on the other side of the sign, what it might say, and if it would enhance the image if it were shown.
I've done a quick modification with the rotation and some enhancement in Levels, especially to add more contrast and bring out the colours. My second modification has some posterizing effect added.
Pamela.
I thought Shark fin also! I just took this really without too much thought or planning (thats my excuse for the camera settings) and ended up with something that I quite fancy printing out and having on the wall. Some of the pictures I do with thought turn out awful! Thanks for your comments really appreciated Smile

hi,
i cant say that i dont like it, i do but you are confusing me.

in the title you are telling me what it is -- and then presenting it in a way that i cant make out what it is.

as an abstract its quite nice, good strong shapes and i can appreciate it that way, but then it becomes not a sign of the times.

right way up, it is a sign of the times and i can see that too.

that apart, taking it as an abstract, there are some good strong shapes andi think you could do a lot to boost the contrast and saturation to make the whole thing more punchy and graphic. i dont know if you have nik colour efex but the tonal contrast preset button would make this zing.

its no bad thing to seek an alternative way of viewing and image, well seen

Phil
Understand, thanks, never heard of ink colour efex, I'll do a search on google to find out more. Another great example of learning something new every time you post a picture. Thanks...by the way probably the pictures just like me.....confused and looking for direction!
