F2 Cat.

By biglog
Another picture from Lancashire Grand Prix 2013 at Carr Mill Dam.This is Malcolm Goodman current British champion in his Mercury powered 200hp F2 catamaran coming round the last bouy leading onto the main straight.Just getting ready to accelerate upto 125mph in about 10 seconds.
Managed to get a good position low down and close to the boats as they came around the bouy.Actually had a job keeping the spray off the lens. All i have done to photo really is a little saturation plus a touch of sharpening.

A powerful shot, in every way.

Quite effective. The lighting is strong, hence the very effective lighting on the spray, but some heavy shadows. Just a stroke or two with the dodge tool to lift detail.

My only comments are:

1 maybe a slightly slower shutter speed would have got more of a sense of movement... This looks absolutely frozen, which surprises me with only 1/320 second; and

2 the sharpening has, prinicpally, affected the spray, which looks quite gritty.

However, as I've never come close to catching the action this well, I probably have no right to comment - and a "frozen" shot both gives the casual viewer a chance to observe detail, and the enthusiast a really good look at technicalities on the craft! It's jsut as valid as a blurrier, fast-looking shot, of course!

Thankyou all for the comments, will try to upload a mod with a few tweaks as suggested.I dont normally like using shapening alot because it can create some not so nice effects, think it may have been a little heavy here.I think the reason it is not blurred is that, due to being quite a head-on shot there is not to much movement in that split second .As for shadows i agree, could be lightened a little.

thanx for your time

Good capture. I like the frozen rather than a blurred look. The spray and water gives a good impression of speed. Spray is effective with the lighting.
Done a mod where I lightened the shadows a little.

Thanks for the mod ian,the shadows were definately to dark i like what you have done there.Agree with you about the spray, have looked at original and it does just look a bit gritty, think that is where it is so fine and sun is glistening onit.

Thanks martin
